Reverse conversion formula
0–15 human years: dog age = human age ÷ 15; 15–24: 1 + (human age − 15) ÷ 9; above 24: 2 + (human age − 24) ÷ size rate.
The size rate is 4 for small, 5 for medium, 6 for large, and 7 for giant dogs. The result is rounded to one decimal place so the display stays readable. It is a comparison model, not a claim that a human and a dog share identical development.
For a medium-size dog, 40 human years is beyond the model's 24-human-year second milestone. Subtract 24, divide the remaining 16 by the medium rate of 5, and add the first two dog years.

The traditional shortcut gives 40 ÷ 7 = 5.7 dog years. Showing both numbers makes the difference visible; the size-aware reverse estimate stays primary.
WHY SIZE MATTERS
A reverse calculator cannot recover a dog's breed, health history, or genetics from a human-age number. Adult size is a practical input because the same human reference maps to different later-year rates in this transparent model.
The small-dog rate is four human years for each dog year after the second milestone. This produces a higher dog-age number for the same human reference than the large and giant settings.
The medium setting uses five human years per later dog year and is the default example. It is a useful middle estimate for many mixed-breed dogs, but it is not a breed-specific curve.
The large setting uses six human years per later dog year. It can produce a younger dog-age equivalent for the same human number because each later dog year covers more human reference years.
The giant setting uses seven human years per later dog year. Treat the result as broad context, especially when a dog is a mix or its expected adult size is uncertain.
READ THE RESULT
The output is most useful when read as a comparison with visible assumptions. It is not a conversion of a human biological age into a dog's actual calendar age.
ACCURACY AND LIMITATIONS
Human years and dog years are not interchangeable biological units. This page reverses a public heuristic so you can inspect the arithmetic, but the output should not be used to make health or care decisions by itself.
The tool solves the site's forward formula backward. A mathematically consistent inverse is not proof that the underlying assumptions describe every dog.
A small, medium, large, or giant label cannot capture every breed, cross, body condition, or individual aging pattern. When uncertain, compare two adjacent sizes.
Adding months helps avoid an unnecessary whole-year jump, but the model still rounds to one decimal and includes a range. More digits would suggest accuracy the input cannot support.
